Ian Blackford called on the UK to use a sanctions mechanism like the Magnitsky law against the official Minsk.

Leader of Scottish National Party Ian Blackford met with the leader of the European Belarus civil campaign Andrei Sannikov, and Charter’97 representative in Brussels Denis Kazakevich.

Ian Blackfors noted that the deteriorating situation in Belarus requires an immediate, co-ordinated and effective response from the international community.

“While the UK government's condemnation is welcome, it's clear it must go further in holding the regime to account and consolidate a democratic transition in the country.

It is widely recognised that the elections conducted earlier this month were neither free nor fair, and therefore the results cannot be credibly recognised. Of growing concern has been the response of Alexander Lukashenko's illegitimate regime towards peaceful pro-democracy protesters - with worrying accounts of protesters being detained and tortured, free media being shut down, journalists being targeted, and even of individuals being murdered by authorities.

I have written to the Prime Minister asking him to explore and adopt Magnitsky-style sanctions for Belarusian officials responsible for manipulating the election and ordering or committing human rights violations.

"The UK government must show leadership in upholding human rights. Imposing targeted sanctions – like those announced by the EU in the past few days – would deliver a strong message that electoral fraud and violence against protesters will not be tolerated,” Ian Blackford stressed.
