US House Of Representatives Committee Passed Resolution On Belarus

US House Of Representatives Committee Passed Resolution On Belarus

The resolution calls for tougher sanctions against the Lukashenka regime.

On Thursday, the Foreign Affairs Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously passed a resolution urging to strengthen sanctions against Belarus. The text of the resolution is published on the website of the U.S. Congress.

Here are some specific measures proposed in the resolution:

To call for further targeted sanctions agreed upon by the U.S., the European Union, the United Kingdom, Canada, other U.S. allies and partners against the Belarusian authorities.

To consider, in coordination with transatlantic partners, the imposition of sanctions against Belarusian state-owned companies that have violated the rights of their employees in connection with their participation in the ongoing democratic movement in Belarus.

To call on the transatlantic community to reconsider all financial support for the Lukashenka regime, including procurement contracts.

The resolution also calls for the immediate release of all politically motivated detainees, an international investigation of human rights violations during and after the August 9, 2020 presidential elections, and new free and fair OSCE-monitored elections.

The document also once again emphasizes that last year's presidential elections in Belarus were neither free nor fair, and the U.S. does not recognize the legitimacy of Lukashenka.
