Another blow!
The EU may consider further sanctions against the Lukashenka regime after the trial in Minsk, where Belarusian opposition activists Maryja Kalesnikava and Maksim Znak were unreasonably sentenced to long terms of imprisonment in violation of all fundamental rights.
This was stated by EU representative Peter Stano during a press briefing in Brussels on Monday, reports Ukrinform's correspondent.
"The EU was present at the trial, we had a diplomat present there. We will soon release a statement on the matter... There have already been several rounds of sanctions applied for different reasons - for election fraud last August, for ongoing repression and human rights violations, including economic and financial sanctions that have already been imposed. The EU is ready to undertake further measures if there is agreement from all 27 member states that the time has come to increase the pressure and respond with new sanctions," said Stano.
