European Parliament Resolution: Lukashenka Should Be Held Accountable Before International Tribunal

Brussels supported Belarusian volunteers and political prisoners.

On November 24, at the plenary session in Strasbourg, the European Parliament by a majority vote adopted a resolution “The continuing repression of the democratic opposition and civil society in Belarus.”

MEPs condemned numerous violations of human rights.

Many political prisoners were named. First of all, the deputies called for the release of the head of the Viasna human rights center Ales Bialiatski before the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony.

In total, the resolution contains the names of more than 50 political prisoners. The MEPs noted the verdicts in the “Autukhovich case” as a separate item.

The European Parliament strongly condemned the use of Belarusian territory for aggression in Ukraine, and reminded Lukashenka of responsibility.

“Lukashenka and those associated with him are equally responsible for the war crimes in Ukraine and should be held accountable before the international tribunal and the International Criminal Court,” stated in the resolution.

“The European Parliament expresses support for the Kastuś Kalinoŭski Regiment and other volunteers supporting Ukraine in its defence against the Russian war of aggression; endorses the position of the Belarusian democratic opposition and civil society that Belarus should be recognised as an occupied or de facto occupied territory, and joins them in calling for the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from Belarus and Ukraine,” the resolution notes.
