Viachaslau Siuchyk: Belarusians Are Ready To Defend Their Independence With Arms
Viachaslau Siuchyk

The heroism of the Slutsk people was imprinted on future generations of Belarusian fighters.

A rally on the anniversary of the Slutsk Armed Uprising took place on November 27 in the center of Warsaw near the monument to Tadeusz Kosciuszko. The rally was attended by about a hundred Belarusians who came to the event with Belarusian national white-red-white flags and portraits of Belarusian volunteers who died in Ukraine.

The leader of the Razam Movement Viachaslau Siuchyk also took part in the action. Charter97.org spoke with an opposition politician about the importance of the Slutsk Uprising for modern Belarus:

— November 27 is the day of heroes. I am absolutely sure that in a free Belarus it will be a public holiday. The fact that in 1920 on this day an uprising against the Bolsheviks began in the Slutsk district is extremely important. The uprising was on political grounds: for the independent Belarusian People's Republic under the white-red-white flag. The people of Slutsk fought for the Belarusian power in Belarus. Sooner or later it will happen, and November 27 will become a public holiday for Belarus.

— Can we draw historical parallels between the Slutsk Uprising and the current situation in Belarus?

— The Slutsk Uprising is actually a very heroic act. You perfectly understand what forces were already on the part of Bolshevik Moscow at the end of 1920, it was practically a new communist empire. And the fact that the Belarusians stood up with arms for the independence of their country at that moment is very important.

I will note that they had a few weapons, but there was enough courage. I was greatly impressed by the fact that participation in the armed uprising was absolutely massive among the people of Slutsk. If there were enough weapons, it is not known how everything would have ended, despite the power of the Bolshevik hordes.

The heroism of the Slutsk people was imprinted on future generations of Belarusian fighters. It is extremely important today when the Russian-Ukrainian war is going on, to remember the feat of the Slutsk peasants.

— Are the Belarusians ready to defend the independence of their country with weapons in their hands today?

— They are complete ready. The fact of the Slutsk Armed Uprising is the answer to your question. Of course, the Belarusians are ready, it’s another matter to create such conditions for the formation of the Belarusian national army, because the power in Belarus has been seized by a gang that today is trying to turn Belarus into a concentration camp. This Lukashenka gang brought almost Stalinist times back to our country, it is now very difficult for Belarusians themselves not only to act, but even to survive.

If we talk about the Belarusian national interests, then Russian imperialism is the eternal enemy for the Belarusian people. Naturally, Belarusians are very interested in seeing this atheistic Russian empire defeated in Ukraine. There may be some room for manoeuvre in Belarus. The fact that Belarusian military units have already been formed in Ukraine gives hope to Belarusians.
