The unit is being commanded by a person involved in the case of Boris Nemtsov’s murder.
Adam Kadyrov, the sixteen-year-old son of the Chechnya head Ramzan Kadyrov, has been appointed curator of the Chechen battalion named after Sheikh Mansur as part of the Russian Ministry of Defense, said the speaker of the Chechen parliament Magomed Daudov.
“Adam Kadyrov has been entrusted with an important direction: from now on he will oversee one of the most combat-ready units within the Russian Ministry of Defense,” Daudov wrote in his Telegram channel.
He expressed the hope that Kadyrov’s son “will do everything necessary to ensure that the battalion’s personnel are provided with everything necessary to carry out their assigned tasks efficiently.” Also, according to Daudov, Kadyrov Jr. was awarded the “star of the Sheikh Mansur battalion.”
State Duma deputy from Chechnya Adam Delimkhanov, in turn, said that he introduced Kadyrov’s son to the battalion personnel. “This appointment was a natural result of Adam’s significant merits in upholding the religious, family and cultural values of our people,” Delimkhanov emphasized, calling Kadyrov Jr. a born warrior.
The Sheikh Mansur battalion, which was created at the end of October, is headed by the former deputy commander of the North battalion, Ruslan Geremeev, who was involved in the murder of politician Boris Nemtsov. Sheikh Mansur himself was the leader of the people's liberation movement of the highlanders of the North Caucasus in 1785–1791.
In August 2023, Adam Kadyrov beat Nikita Zhuravel, accused of burning the Koran, in a pre-trial detention center in Grozny. According to the Investigative Committee, Zhuravel received the task of burning the holy book of Muslims from the Ukrainian special services. For beating the prisoner, Kadyrov called his son “a hero of all Muslims.” After this, the heads of the Muslim regions of Russia hastened to award the teenager with various orders.
In particular, Kadyrov received the title of Hero of Chechnya, the second most important order “Duslyk” of the Republic of Tatarstan, the highest order of Karachay-Cherkessia “For services to the Karachay-Cherkess Republic”, the order “For services to the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic”, as well as the order “For service to the religion of Islam First Degree”, and “For services to the Ummah”.
In early November, Kadyrov appointed Adam to an “important” and “responsible” position in his own security service. Before this, Kadyrov himself was the head of such a service for his father, Akhmat Kadyrov.
