Getting Closer To Moscow: What Is Known About Ukrainian Drones Attacks

The brightest strikes on the bases of the invaders.

The Russian Federation reported the explosion of another drone. At the same time, the circumstances of its destruction were not specified. The incident occurred on the night of February 6 in the Kaluga region. It is only 150 kilometers from Moscow.

The Charter97.org website has collected the most striking examples of Ukrainian drone attacks on enemy targets.

“Saki”

The first flashy drone attack took place on August 9. A series of powerful explosions occurred at the Crimean airfield Saki. The Saki airfield near the resort village of Novofedorivka is a key Russian air base in the occupied Crimea.

The 3rd Fighter Aviation Regiment was stationed there, which included Su-30SM, Su-33 aircraft and Su-24M bombers.

There could be from 20 to 30 Russian planes at this airfield.

Engels and Ryazan

The first major UAV attack on objects located deep into Russia occurred on December 5. Then the drone attacked the airport in Engels, Saratov region, where there were Tu-95MS, Tu-160, Tu-22M3 strategic bombers of the Russian army. As a result, two aircraft were damaged. Two people were also injured and taken to the hospital.

The attack was also made on the airfield in the Ryazan region. Three people were killed and six others were injured.

Later, the Russian Ministry of Defense admitted that explosions occurred at military airfields in Engels and Ryazan, hundreds of kilometers from the front line.

The Russian ministry said in a statement that the strike was carried out by Soviet-made unmanned aerial vehicles allegedly launched by Ukraine.

On December 26, drones attacked a military airfield in Engels again. The Baza Telegram channel, which is known to be close to the Russian security forces, reported that the fire area after the explosion was 120 square meters. According to preliminary data, 3 people died, four more were hospitalized.

Kursk

On December 6, drones hit the airfield in Kursk.

According to the governor of the Kursk region Roman Starovoit, as a result of a drone attack, an oil storage tank caught fire. The fire was so massive that it was seen from different parts of the city.

What is known about Ukrainian drone strikes

Despite the fact that Ukraine does not officially recognize the strikes of its drones on targets in the Russian Federation, attributing everything to “smoking and violation of safety regulations by Russian soldiers,” Western media sources in the Ukrainian government confirm that these are UAF drones.

As The Financial Times wrote, the Ukrainian drones that attacked Russian territory are a joint development of government agencies and private business.

The interlocutor of the publication emphasized that a private company, which he did not name, can “often” produce new such drones.

Also, an adviser to the Ukrainian government in the field of defense said in an interview with the Financial Times that the Armed Forces of Ukraine no longer have any restrictions on strikes against Russia. Ukrainian drones can even reach Siberia.

Analysts believe that strikes on objects located in the depths of the Russian Federation are a new tactic of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Kyiv is trying to demonstrate that there are no safe places in Russia now.

“The attacks are repeated. We have no range restrictions, and soon we will be able to hit all targets in Russia, including in Siberia. In Ukraine, we know how difficult it is to defend against such air attacks. Russia will soon have no safe zones either,” a source in the Ukrainian government told the FT.

Ukraine has not yet claimed responsibility for the strikes. Also, many details of the operation remain secret. With their attacks, the Armed Forces of Ukraine can achieve that Russia will have to disperse its air defense and weapons throughout the country.

One Western defense official said the attacks would make Russians less confident.

“Now the Russian Federation will have to think about how to disperse its military equipment and secure it,” the source said.

Air defense in Moscow and near Putin's residence

The Russian authorities have responded to the threat of Ukrainian drones. On the roofs of buildings in the center of Moscow, installations of the Pantsir-S1 air defense missile system appeared.

Air defense systems also appeared at a small distance from the Rublevsky highway near Moscow, where the Russian elite lives. These air defense systems protect Putin and his family from a possible Ukrainian strike. This conclusion was made by the Russian publication Agency after an air defense installation appeared near the Valdai residence of the Russian ruler. There are simply no other objects for protection, except for the residence.
