Ukraine Demands To Convene UN Security Council Due To Statement On Nuclear Weapons Deployment In Belarus

Kyiv expects effective action from the UK, China, the U.S. and France.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry issued a statement regarding Russia's decision to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus. The Ukrainian side called it “another provocative step”, demanded to convene the UN Security Council, and called on Belarusians to prevent its implementation.

“The latest statements by the Russian Federation about intentions to deploy tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus are another provocative step of the criminal Putin regime, which undermines the foundations of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, the architecture of nuclear disarmament and the system of international security as a whole,” the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said. “Such intentions cannot but cause particular concern for the entire world community, because Russia declares them while continuing its unprovoked aggressive war against Ukraine. Despite the horrendous crimes against humanity and war crimes that the Kremlin commits in this war of conquest against a sovereign state, Russia is demonstrating its inability to win on the battlefield.

“Ukraine appeals to the Belarusian society to prevent the implementation of criminal intentions to deploy nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus contrary to its obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, which will further turn this country into a hostage of the Kremlin and will have catastrophic consequences for its future,” the statement says. “We appeal to the states of the Group of Seven and the European Union with a request to warn the Belarusian authorities about the ongoing consequences for Belarus, if it agrees to accept tactical nuclear weapons from Russia on its territory”.

The Foreign Ministry said that Ukraine expects effective action from the UK, China, the U.S. and France, including “as permanent members of the UN Security Council, who have a special responsibility to prevent threats of aggression using nuclear weapons”.

“We demand to immediately convene an extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council for this purpose,” the Foreign Ministry says. “Ukraine calls on all members of the world community to convey to the criminal Putin regime the categorical unacceptability of its regular nuclear provocations, and to adopt decisive measures in order to effectively deter and prevent any possibility of the use of nuclear weapons by the aggressor state. Russia once again confirms its chronic inability to be a responsible manager of nuclear weapons as a means of deterring and preventing war, and not an instrument of threats and intimidation. The world must be united against the one who endangers the future of human civilization.

Important to note, on Saturday, March 25, Vladimir Putin announced that he had agreed with Aliaksandr Lukashenka on the deployment of tactical nuclear missiles on the territory of Belarus.
