Those who denounced the artist, who judged him and who were his jailers.
The sudden death of political prisoner and artist Ales Pushkin came as a shock to many. Why did he die? What was the exact reason for his death? Will someone be held responsible for this? There are a lot of questions. But there are no questions about who is to blame for the tragedy: the entire repressive machine created by Aliaksandr Lukashenka and those who played their part in the detention and imprisonment of the artist, Euroradio writes.
Informer: Volha Bondarava
In the spring of 2021, informer Volha Bondarava from Hrodna visited an exhibition at the local City Life Center. Ales Pushkin made a portrait of the Belarusian anti-Soviet activist Yauhen Zhykhar, and it was among other paintings at the exhibition.
So, she filmed the exhibition on her smartphone, posted a video of her indignation on YouTube, and launched a campaign on social media. A few days later, the Prosecutor General's Office initiated a criminal case against Ales Pushkin.

“Our company decided to remember how the process of putting the Zmagar creature behind bars took place,” Bondareva wrote in her TG channel in a post about Pushkin’s death, adding screenshots of her denunciations to the post.
Prosecutor: Aliaksandr Karol
By the age of 31, the "Star Prosecutor" managed to act as a state prosecutor in the case of Marya Kalesnikava and Maksim Znak, Ales Bialiatski and other detainees in the Viasna case. His last high-profile case was the trial against Eduard Babariko, who was sentenced to 8 years in prison.

Prosecutor Karol also brought charges against Ales Pushkin. He demanded five years of strict regime for the artist. Recall: for a painting.
Judge: Alena Shylko
Judge Shylko has been running cases for political reasons for almost two decades. Among her high-profile sentences are 2 and 3.5 years for Zmitser Dashkevich and Eduard Lobau in 2010, and recently she considered the cases of human rights activist Nasta Loika (7 years in prison), media manager Kanstantsin Zalatykh (4 years), owner of the Hookah No 1 Ivan Murauyou (2.5 years).
Finally, it was she who decided to sentence Ales Pushkin to exactly the same term that the prosecutor demanded.
Shylko issued many guilty verdicts for lesser-known political prisoners.
Head of a penal colony and a local judge
After the verdict, Ales Pushkin was sent to a high-security penal colony No 22 in Ivatsevichy, known as the "Wolf Holes". At least in the summer of 2022 (no other information is available at the moment), Siarhei Rechyts was the head of the colony.
The administration of the colony placed Ales Pushkin in a cell-type room for five months. After that, the judge of the Ivatsevichy district, Aliaksandr Kirylovich, ruled to transfer Ales Pushkin to the prison regime for 18 months - this was initiated by the administration of the colony.
Authorities of the Prison No 1
After the tightening of the regime, Ales Pushkin was transferred to Hrodna Prison No 1, where his health deteriorated. There, he was unable to receive the necessary medical care in a timely manner, and died in the intensive care unit of the Hrodno Emergency Care Hospital on the night of July 10-11, 2023.
According to the latest available information, Pavel Kazakou is the head of Hrodna Prison No 1. He also holds other political prisoners, including Mikalai Autukhovich and, as it has recently become known, Pavel Seviarynets.
Of course, this list is far from complete, but it allows us to name at least some of the characters in one particular tragedy.
