‘Granny Swore And Turned Off BT Channel’

The Belarusian people react to the propaganda.

A reader of the Charter97.org website told how Belarusians react to Lukashenka's propaganda:

“I am a primary school teacher from Minsk. There are three generations of our family living in the same apartment: grandparents, mom and me. My elders like to watch TV. I can't help it, they've been watching it all their lives. But sometimes funny stories do happen to my grandmother.

There was a news show on the BT channel. They told us how good it is to live here. A welfare state with all conveniences: education is free, medicine is also free, salaries are growing every month, prices have been frozen, and the average salary in Belarus has reached as much as BYR 1,850.”

According to the reader, her grandmother got active talking about it:

“Who has such salaries? Her daughter (that is, my mother) is working in a store for 1.5 rates, and has 700 - 800 rubles. Her granddaughter also works more than full-time at school and earns 1,000 rubles. My grandmother's conclusion was very simple - ‘sheer nonsense’. And she turned the TV off.”
