Houthis Attack Putin's ‘Shadow Fleet’ Off Yemen Coast

A tanker carrying Russian oil was hit.

Yemen's Houthis mistakenly fired on a tanker believed to be carrying Russian oil in the Gulf of Aden.

This is reported by the British maritime security company Ambrey, cited by Reuters.

According to Ambrey, the attack occurred off the coast of Yemen. The captain of a Panama-flagged tanker alerted the Royal Navy's Maritime Trade Coordination Center that the ship had come under fire. The missile fired towards the tanker fell into the water within 400-500 meters from its side.

The tanker's crew spotted three small craft, one of which was believed to have fired a missile.

There were no injuries; the ship continued along its route.

Ambrey claims the Houthis acted on outdated information. The tanker that became the target of the attack previously belonged to the British company Union Maritime; this data ceased to be relevant five months ago. This is the second time that a tanker carrying Russian oil has become the target of a mistaken attack by the Houthis, the company notes.

Yemen's Houthis, who control large parts of the country and are backed by Iran, have been actively carrying out missile and drone attacks on Western commercial ships in the Red Sea since November 19. They see this as a protest against Israeli military actions in the Gaza Strip.

In response to these actions, the United States and Great Britain carried out strikes against Houthi military targets in Yemen.
