A new stage of strategic partnership has begun.
On January 12, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak signed a bilateral security agreement.
This document was the first among the security agreements in the framework of the NATO Vilnius Summit talks between Ukraine, G7 and allied states.
Under this treaty, the UK undertakes to provide security guarantees to Ukraine until it joins NATO.
In his article for The Times, Zelensky noted: “With British help, we can ensure freedom defeats aggression.”
"This is not just a declaration, this is reality: we are allies and working together to protect European security and protect our values," Zelensky wrote.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy pointed out that the UK became the first country to enter into a strategic alliance with Ukraine, but it will not be the last.
"There is no doubt: Ukrainians deserve this union. By driving out the Russian occupiers, Ukraine has demonstrated its ability to restore security both on land and at sea and has demonstrated how much Ukrainians value their freedom, which is no less important. Now Ukraine simply needs to give everything necessary so that it can defeat Russia in this historic battle," Zelensky said.
He noted that the agreement with the UK goes beyond the usual alliance in the field of security – this is a new stage of partnership between states, which is of strategic importance for a hundred years ahead.
“The UK has always defended freedom. For the sake of peace and our common future, it must keep doing it. When we win together, any aggressor, big or small, will know what awaits him if he violates international law. We have shown that it’s possible to defeat Russia. If we can overcome such a danger to the international order, then we will be able to convince even the most serious potential aggressors that the war will be a loss for them as well. That's why we have to win. That's why we have to be together. That's why our alliance matters,” Zelensky wrote.
