Authorities' Myth About 'Free Higher Education' Debunked

The majority of Belarusian students study for a fee.

52.4% of all students at higher education institutions in Belarus study for a fee.

At the same time, 39% of students at state universities study full-time for a fee. This data was provided by the National Statistics Committee at the beginning of the 2023/2024 academic year.

There are a total of 49 higher education institutions in Belarus. They are attended by 232.9 thousand people.

In 2023 the universities will graduate 50.3 thousand specialists, 7 thousand people will get master's degrees. In Belarus there are 253 undergraduate and postgraduate students per 10 thousand people.

It should be noted that in most European countries there are no paid forms of education at the bachelor level in state universities. In Germany, for example, higher education is completely free.

It should be remembered that the authorities often like to say that "higher education is free in Belarus".
