The State Department has commented on the raids of the Belarusian security forces.
The U.S. intends to tighten sanctions, as well as take other measures against Belarus and its authorities, headed by Aliaksandr Lukashenka. This is stated in a written statement, published on the website of the U.S. department.
"The U.S. condemns the recent raids of the Lukashenka regime, detentions and in general the regime's ongoing attacks against human rights and democratic aspirations of the people of Belarus," the document says.
The U.S. authorities "will continue to hold the regime accountable through sanctions and other methods for its brutal crackdowns and support for Russia's war against Ukraine."
Earlier, the call for new sanctions and condemnation of the Belarusian authorities was made by the Polish Foreign Ministry and the EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell.
We remind you, a mass raid on former political prisoners and relatives of the current ones has been held since January 23. The people are interrogated and detained. Human rights activists know about at least 100 such cases.
