The US And EU Consider Georgia Elections False

And call on Tbilisi to investigate violations.

The US and the EU are calling on the Georgian authorities to investigate violations during the parliamentary elections held on October 26, Current Time writes.

According to the Central Election Commission of Georgia, the ruling Georgian Dream party received 53.92% of the vote; the opposition Coalition for Change received 11.04%, the Unity – National Movement party received 10.16%, Strong Georgia received 8.8%, and Gakharia for Georgia received 7.8%. The joint mission of international observers from the OSCE, the Council of Europe, the European Parliament, and NATO stated that voting day in Georgia was "marred by an uneven playing field, pressure, and a tense atmosphere." The Coalition for Change, the UNM, and Strong Georgia stated that they do not recognize the election results. Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili also did not recognize the results.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said international and domestic observers had pointed to the ruling party’s abuse of power, vote buying and voter intimidation. All of this, he said, contributed to an uneven playing field and undermined public and international confidence in the possibility of a fair outcome to the elections in Georgia.

“International observers did not recognize the election results as free and fair. We condemn all violations of international norms and join calls by international and domestic observers for a full investigation into all allegations of election-related violations,” he said in a statement.

The EU calls on the Georgian Central Election Commission and other state bodies to fulfill their duty to promptly, transparently and independently investigate and adjudicate election violations and allegations. “These violations must be clarified and addressed. This is a necessary step to restore confidence in the electoral process,” the statement reads.

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) has previously condemned documented cases of vote-buying, double voting, physical violence and intimidation. The head of the European Parliament delegation, Antonio López-Istúriz White, said the ruling Georgian Dream party had used hostile rhetoric in the run-up to the elections, as well as “promoting Russian disinformation” and various conspiracy theories in an attempt to “undermine and manipulate the vote.”
