The lawsuit was filed by the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office.
Recently, billionaire Elon Musk promised to pay $1 million to a random person every day until election day in the US for supporting his petition. Now he has to appear in court.
This is reported on Reuters.
As the agency writes, the court ordered all parties, including Elon Musk, to arrive at the court hearing in Philadelphia on Thursday. The process is related to a lawsuit that seeks to prevent a political action committee controlled by the billionaire from giving $1 million to registered US voters in swing states ahead of the November 5 election.
The Philadelphia District Attorney's Office reportedly filed the lawsuit on Monday. It called the prize giveaway from Musk's America PAC, which supports US presidential candidate Donald Trump, an ‘illegal lottery’ that enticed Pennsylvania residents to share personal data.
‘It is further ordered that all parties be present at the hearing,’ the judge wrote in the order.
The hearing in the case was rescheduled from Friday to Thursday morning.
For their part, representatives for America PAC - as well as Elon Musk - did not respond to requests for comment.
A week and a half ago, Elon Musk promised to randomly give $1 million every day to anyone who signs his online petition on free speech and gun rights. He specified that he would give out the money until November 5, which is the day of the US presidential election.
