German President Agrees With Early Election Date
FRANK-WALTER STEINMEIER

They will be held in the winter of next year.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has approved the date of early parliamentary elections to be held on February 23, 2025.

This was announced by the office of the German president.

On Tuesday, Steinmeier received the leaders of parliamentary factions from the ruling coalition Rolf Mützenich (SPD), Britta Hasselmann and Katharina Drege (Greens), as well as the leader of the opposition CDU Friedrich Merz.

Following the meeting, Steinamer welcomed the fact that the parliamentary factions had agreed on a date for a vote of confidence in the government in the Bundestag on December 16.

‘The federal president made it clear that if the Bundestag expresses no confidence in the federal chancellor, he will quickly decide to dissolve parliament,’ the chancellery said in a statement.

In addition, it said, Steinmeier ‘considers February 23, 2025 a realistic date for new elections’.

‘The Federal President also called on all parliamentary groups to responsibly and jointly discuss what legislative proposals can still be implemented in this legislative period to ensure the internal and external security of Germany,’ emphasised the chancellery.

We remind you, the political crisis in Germany began on November 6, when Scholz decided to fire Finance Minister Christian Lindner.

After the collapse of the coalition, Scholz first named January 15 as the date for a vote of confidence in his minority government. However, he recently said he was prepared to hold the vote before Christmas.
