US General McMaster: Next Months To Be Crucial For War In Ukraine

Many people have an overly narrow view of the situation.

Lieutenant General Herbert McMaster, who also previously served as Donald Trump's national security adviser, said the coming months will be ‘really crucial’ in determining the next phase of the war in Ukraine. This, he said, is related to the expectation of Trump's inauguration as President. This is reported by CBS News.

McMaster noted that both Russia and Ukraine are seeking to maximise their success on the battlefield before the new Trump administration arrives. This will give them more leverage in future negotiations.

In order to strengthen Ukraine's position, the Biden administration approved the delivery of anti-personnel mines and also lifted restrictions on Ukraine's use of U.S. long-range missiles to strike Russian territory.

Meanwhile, many candidates for key positions in the new Trump administration either did not support continued aid to Ukraine or favoured a negotiated end to the war.

According to McMaster, this dynamic is a ‘real problem’ and is dealing a ‘psychological blow to the Ukrainians.’

‘The Ukrainians are struggling to build the manpower they need and sustain their defensive efforts. It is important that they get the weapons and training they need. They also need to be confident that they can win. Any reports that we might cut aid are very destructive to their morale,’ McMaster said.

He expressed hope that both Trump himself and his team realise the obvious link between the war in Ukraine and the new axis of aggressors who seek to destroy the existing world order. McMaster mentioned North Korean soldiers fighting in Europe for the first time since the end of World War II, China's support for Russia, and drone and missile shipments from Iran.

The general said many people look at Ukraine too narrowly and do not understand Putin's intentions.
