Brutal detentions of protesters.
The situation near the Georgian parliament on December 29 escalated due to clashes between the police and participants in the anti-government protest. The demonstrators are protesting against President Mikheil Kavelashvili, whose legitimacy is being questioned by the fifth president Salome Zurabishvili, the opposition and some international partners.
Ekho Kavkaza and Tbilisi Life report. Security forces began detaining protesters, explaining their actions by the fact that people were allegedly blocking the roadway.
The detentions are being carried out in a rather harsh manner: police carry protesters holding arms and legs, and several victims require medical assistance.
Videos are appearing on social media pages showing police using force against young people on Rustaveli Avenue, including harsh actions against women. One of the videos shows enforcers dragging a young woman holding her arms and legs into a police car. According to eyewitnesses, the detainee was simply standing next to the police officers, who began to randomly detain everyone who happened to be nearby.
The exact number of people detained on Rustaveli near the Kashveti Cathedral is unknown. According to preliminary data, there were about four. Interior Ministry officers and people in balaclavas grabbed demonstrators indiscriminately, detaining those who were nearby.
At the same time, the protesters themselves insist that they were not blocking the roadway and are outraged by the reasons why the police began arresting them.
It should be noted that Kavelashvili, who took office as president two weeks ago, was inaugurated today. He was elected by a board of voters, most of whom represent the ruling pro-Russian Georgian Dream party. The opposition considers both the parliament and the president illegitimate.
