Sikorski: Situation With Repressions In Belarus Worse Than During Martial Law In Poland

The head of the Polish Foreign Minister raised the topic of our country at a meeting with European colleagues.

Head of Polish diplomacy Radoslaw Sikorski raised the topic of repression in Belarus during a meeting with European colleagues and compared it with the military suppression of "Solidarity" in Poland more than 40 years ago. According to the politician, the situation in Belarus is worse.

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski spoke about Belarus during an official meeting of the EU foreign ministers in Brussels, reports the Polish PAP. news agency.

"Fake presidential elections will also be held in Belarus soon, as in Russia. We all remember how the previous elections ended - the wave of repression is still unabated. In the ratio to the population it is worse than we had it during the martial law.

We remind you that today there are more political prisoners in Belarus and Russia together than there were under Leonid Brezhnev in the USSR," said Sikorski.

Martial law in Poland (1981-1983) was imposed by the then communist authorities of the country to suppress mass protests and strikes of the "Solidarity" independent labour movement. According to various estimates, from several dozen to a hundred people were killed and about 10,000 people were arrested during the years of martial law.
