Lithuania Breaks Trade Agreements With Belarus

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already prepared and made public the draft resolutions.

The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry has proposed to the government to terminate the current agreements on trade and economic co-operation signed with Russia and Belarus two decades ago.

The Ministry has already prepared and made public the relevant draft resolutions, reports LRT.

According to the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry, the agreements should be denounced due to the ongoing military aggression of Russia and Belarus against Ukraine and the fact that cooperation with them is completely suspended and impossible.

"After adopting the draft resolutions on denunciation, the governments of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus will be notified through diplomatic channels of the decision to terminate the agreements," the ministry said.

The Ministry does not expect any negative consequences from the unilateral termination of the agreements by Lithuania.

The agreement with Belarus was signed in December 1994, and with Russia - in November 1993. Bilateral commissions were also established, but the meetings have not been held since 2011 in the case of Russia and since 2015 in the case of Belarus.
