Verkhovna Rada Of Ukraine Urges To Put Lukashenka Behind Bars

Ukrainian deputies called on the democratic world to support the struggle of Belarusians for freedom.

On February 25, the inter-factional deputy association of the Ukrainian Rada "For Democratic Belarus!" issued a statement calling on the international community not to recognise the legitimacy of the so-called "elections" in Belarus and to use all available tools to put Lukashenka behind bars, writes the "Radio Svaboda" website.

The statement notes that the current "elections" in Belarus are held in the virtual absence of the opposition, international observers, as well as with thousands of political prisoners in prisons, not at polling stations. The MPs mention that in 2023, a law was signed to amend the Electoral Code of Belarus, according to which the turnout threshold was abolished for the election of deputies, allowing these elections to be held even if the people of Belarus refuse to take part in them.

"The holding of parliamentary and local "elections today is not a process of expression of the will of the Belarusian people, but only a tool to deepen and implement the dictatorship of self-proclaimed President Lukashenka," reads the statement.

The statement of the inter-factional deputy association of the Ukrainian Rada "For Democratic Belarus!" calls on the governments and parliaments of democratic countries of the world "to support the struggle of the Belarusian people for their freedom.
