Tsikhanouskaya Meets With Foreign Ministers Of G7 Countries

What issues were discussed?

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya met with the foreign ministers of key Western countries at the G7 summit in Capri, Italy.

“I raised the issue of protecting our independence. Belarus should not become a consolation prize for Putin. We discussed support for Ukraine and Belarus with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. He was interested in the fate of political prisoners and what else we can do for their release,” says Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya.

She also spoke with the EU High Representative and the foreign ministers of Great Britain, Germany, France, Canada and Italy. The representative of Belarus discussed funding for Belarusian media and organizations, assistance to former political prisoners and families of political prisoners with European diplomats.

In addition, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya spoke about bringing Lukashenka and his accomplices to justice and asked to separate Belarusians from the regime. The summit participants adopted a joint statement in which Belarus was mentioned:

“We continue to condemn the complicity of the Belarusian regime in Russia’s war against Ukraine. We express our continued concern about the regime's ongoing repression of independent media, civil society, as well as the opposition and citizens peacefully expressing their views. We condemn the ill-treatment of political prisoners and ask for their immediate and unconditional release.”

Italy currently chairs the Group of Seven. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of this country, Antonio Tajani, invited Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya to the summit.

Following the summit, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya promised that she would do everything possible to ensure that the issue of Belarus does not leave the international agenda.
