Lithuanian Presidential Elections: Second Round To Take Place

The same candidates as five years ago will meet in the second round.

After the majority of votes were counted, it turned out that as five years ago, Gitanas Nauseda, the country's leader seeking re-election, and Ingrida Šimonīte, the candidate of the conservatives, the Prime Minister, will meet in the second round of the presidential elections in Lithuania.

After counting the results at all 1,895 polling stations, it became clear that Nauseda and Šimonite had made it to the second round of the elections with 44.54 per cent and 19.94 per cent of the votes, Delfi reported.

Ignas Vėgėlė, who ran as an independent candidate in the presidential election, came third. He was considered one of the most likely opponents of Gitanas Naouseda in the second round of the presidential elections. He received 12.47 per cent.

He was followed by Remigijus Zemaitaitis with 9.97 per cent, Eduardas Vaitkus with 7.66 per cent, Dainius Žalimas with 3.29 per cent, Andrius Mazuronis with 1.47 per cent and Giedrimas Jeglinskas with 1.33 per cent of votes.

This year, the scenario of the previous 2019 presidential elections was repeated, when Nauseda and Šimonite also made it to the second round of elections. At that time, however, the results of the first round of elections were slightly more favourable for Šimonite than for Nauseda.

Record Voter Turnout

These 2024 presidential elections and the referendum on citizenship were characterised by an incredibly high voter turnout that surprised even political analysts.

The Central Election Commission (CEC) reported that 59.37 per cent of voters declared their electoral will. This is the highest voter turnout for the presidential elections in more than two decades.
