US Military Bases In Europe Brought On High Alert

Due to the possible sabotage by "Russian-backed agents".

US military bases in Europe have been brought on high alert due to reports that they are being considered as a possible sabotage target by "Russian-backed actor", CNN reports.

U.S. military bases in Europe were brought to a state of high alert last week due to reports that "Russian-backed actors" were considering sabotage against a U.S. military contingent, sources familiar with the matter told the TV station.

According to them, the intelligence information received over the past two weeks was considered "sufficiently alarming" for additional security protocols to be put in place.

U.S. European Command (USEUCOM) spokesman Dan Day told CNN that "the increased vigilance is not associated with one threat, but with a combination of factors potentially affecting the security of U.S. military forces in the European theatre."

In late June, the network reported that several U.S. military bases in Europe had raised their alert levels to the Charlie defence level. It is explained that this level "is introduced in the event of an incident or intelligence indicating the likelihood of some form of terrorist action or targeting of personnel or facilities." According to one of the TV station's interlocutors, they had not seen this level of threat "for at least a decade."

Specifically, on July 1, the command of the U.S. Air Force's Spangdahlem Air Base in western Germany ordered pilots of the 52nd Fighter Wing based there to take off their uniforms outside the base. The pilots are required to travel to their duty station in civilian clothes as a "precautionary measure".
