European Trials Of Business For Violating Sanctions Against Russia

What was the punishment?

In the Czech Republic, a local resident was convicted for the first time for violating anti-Russian sanctions, Radio Prague International writes.

The court found a local businessman guilty of exporting cars from the EU to Russia, which is prohibited by European law. In May 2022, Russian-born businessman Vladimir Likhutin tried to smuggle three premium cars to Russia, violating the ban on the sale of cars worth more than 50,000 euros.

Now Likhutin is obliged to pay a fine of 12,000 euros and return to the state 132,000 euros received from Russian customers as advance payments for cars. He is also banned from trading cars for the next 20 months.

In Germany, the court was stricter. A businessman with dual German-Russian citizenship was sentenced to six years and nine months in prison for selling electronics to Russian companies for military use. Thus, the man violated EU sanctions, Reuters reports.

The Stuttgart City Court found that the 59-year-old man had delivered 120,000 parts to Russia that could have been used for military purposes between January 2020 and May 2023. Among these parts were the components used in the Orlan-10 drone, which the Russian army uses in the war against Ukraine. After the outbreak of the large-scale war in Ukraine, the accused tried to hide sales to Russian companies, using documents for destinations such as Hong Kong and Turkey.

The convict pleaded guilty. His 54-year-old business partner received a lesser suspended sentence.
