Palina Sharenda-Panasiuk Was Diagnosed With A Serious Illness
Palina Sharenda-Panasiuk

It can be lethal for the political prisoner.

Palina Sharenda-Panasiuk, an activist of the European Belarus Civil Campaign, was diagnosed with a serious disease — moderate chronic pancreatitis.

Andrei Sharenda, the husband of the political prisoner, told Charter97.org about it. The activist of the European Belarus CIvil Campaign says that the disease became known quite by accident:

"The authorities tried to conceal this information. The Lukashists sent a standard formal reply to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women in response to my complaint, which we filed in March. They disclosed information that Palina has this disease in their reply.

We repeatedly contacted the Department of Corrections and the prison itself to find out the diagnosis of Palina, since she had long complained of abdominal pain. It is also known that she drastically lost weight, sometimes weighing less than 50 kilograms."

Chronic pancreatitis of moderate degree, as Andrei Sharenda said, is characterized by progressive changes in the tissues of the pancreas:

"This kills her, it is an irreversible process. I note that Palina did not have such a diagnosis before, she had another milder illness — Gilbert's syndrome. It is a disease that is characterized by abnormal liver function. Palina had to take a course of medication. However, for the past two years, she has been prohibited from transferring any medications. Most likely, this disease has progressed to chronic pancreatitis.

Doctors say that this disease can be fatal for Palina in her detention conditions. A patient with such a diagnosis should constantly be under the supervision of doctors, undergo a special diet and treatment. Palina's time is running out. Everything must be done so that she is released and treated.

Palina Sharenda-Panasiuk was detained on January 3, 2021. The enforcers broke down the door of the apartment, conducted an inspection, confiscated many things, and Palina was detained and handcuffed and taken to the detention facility. Later, she was transferred to a pre-trial detention center.

On June 9, 2021, the Maskouski District Court of Brest sentenced her to two years in prison, after which she was added sentence terms several times.

Over the years, she was placed in a punishment cell several times and also sent to solitary confinement for six months. Palina is being held incommunicado. In the prison, the activist of the European Belarus suffered a serious deterioration in her health.
