Orbán Called On Zelensky To Cease Fire During Meeting In Kyiv

The Hungarian Prime Minister promoted the Russian narrative.

During negotiations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán promoted the idea of an immediate ceasefire, which is included in all pro-Russian “peace plans”, but did not insist on it.

This was reported by a correspondent for European Pravda.

In statements to the press after the end of bilateral talks on July 2, the Hungarian leader admitted that he had offered his Ukrainian counterpart an immediate ceasefire on the current line of contact with Russian troops.

Orbán emphasized that he is not opposed to Ukrainian plans to end the war, but considers them too long to implement.

“I told Mr. President that his initiatives take a lot of time due to the rules of international diplomacy. That is why I asked Mr. President to think about whether it is possible to do something a little differently: stop the fire and then negotiate with Russia, because a ceasefire would speed up the pace of these negotiations,” Orbán said.

However, Viktor Orbán emphasized that he did not insist on his initiative, and accepted the Ukrainian arguments.

“I am very grateful to the President for his frank opinion on this issue,” he said, promising to convey what he heard to other EU leaders.

President Zelensky avoided this question in his speech, but he noted that Hungary supported Ukraine’s peace initiatives at the summit in Switzerland.
