Ukrainian Forces Repelled One Of The Russian Largest Mechanized Attacks In Donetsk Region

The ISW reported the details.

On Wednesday, July 24, the Ukrainian Defence Forces repelled one of the largest mechanized attacks of the Russian Federation since October 2023 in the west of the Donetsk region.

This is reported in the report of the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

Analysts note that the Armed Forces of Ukraine stopped an intensified Russian mechanized attack numbering a battalion near Konstiantynivka after the Russian troops advanced to the southeastern outskirts of the settlement.

According to the Ukrainian brigade operating in the Kurakhovsk direction, the Russians simultaneously engaged 11 tanks, 45 armored combat vehicles, a rare Terminator combat vehicle, 12 motorcycles and about 200 personnel from several tactical directions.

The brigade also reported that aerial reconnaissance of Ukraine found mechanized forces of the Russian Federation at a distance, after which the Ukrainian forces used artillery, drones and minefields to repel the Russian offensive.

As a result of the fighting, Ukrainian forces damaged or destroyed 6 Russian tanks, 7 armored combat vehicles and all 12 motorcycles. The enemy retreated after loosing its first wave.

The last time ISW observed Russian troops conducting a mechanized attack the size of a battalion in the Donetsk region was in March 2024. The Russians have not conducted larger mechanized offensives since the first days of the four-month operation to capture Avdiivka in October 2023.

Analysts suggest that the occupiers probably intended to move further into Konstiantynivka as part of their efforts for capturing the settlement and cutting the T-0524 Vuhledar-Konstiantynivka highway.

They recalled that Russian sources have long identified the blocking of the T-0524 highway and the interruption of Ukrainian land communication lines with Vuhledar as the main tactical goal in this direction.

Thus, the Russian milbloggers recently suggested that the Russian troops will intensify operations south of Kostiantynivka and force the Ukrainian forces to retreat from positions in and near Vuhledar.

ISW, on the other hand, predicts that the Russians will most likely not achieve operationally significant successes in the area soon, even if they achieve tactically significant successes and force the Ukrainian forces to retreat from nearby positions.

This is due to the fact that the surrounding area does not have operationally significant targets, mainly consists of fields and isolated small settlements, and also does not have significant tactical heights in the vicinity.
