Over illegal campaign financing.

The Paris prosecutor's office has opened an investigation against the leader of the right-wing in France Marine Le Pen on suspicion of illegal financing of the presidential campaign in 2022. This is reported by BFMTV.

The decision was taken by the prosecutor's office after the National Commission on Campaign Accounts and Political Finance (CNCCFP) prepared in April 2023 a report on Le Pen's campaign account for the 2022 presidential election. As BFMTV notes, the investigation began recently.

Candidates in France are not allowed to exceed a set spending limit during election campaigns. If this condition is met, the state reimburses a portion of their campaign expenses.

In case of non-compliance, the CNCCFP can amend the electoral accounts, reduce the amount of reimbursement due and, if necessary, refer the case for investigation.

According to the TV channel, Marine Le Pen is not the only person about whom the CNCCFP has complained to the prosecutor's office, but she is the only one who is under investigation.
