U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris Speaks With Yulia Navalnaya
KAMALA HARRIS

After the release of 16 political prisoners from Russian prisons.

On Thursday, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris spoke with Yulia Navalnaya, widow of Alexei Navalny, following the release of 16 political prisoners from Russian jails. Three Americans, five German and seven Russian citizens were among those released. The announcement was published on the White House website.

The Vice President welcomed the release of the political prisoners and reaffirmed that she will continue to support those fighting for freedom in Russia and around the world. Harris praised Navalnaya's courage in continuing her husband's "work for justice and the rule of law in Russia," the White House said in a statement.

Kamala Harris previously met with Yulia Navalnaya at the Munich 2024 Munich Security Conference in February, hours after news of Navalny's death in a Russian prison. The vice president wrote an article about Yulia Navalnaya for a special issue of TIME magazine dedicated to the 100 most influential people of 2024, the Voice of America publication says.

Navalnaya previously called the release of political prisoners from Russian jails a "great happiness." "Every released political prisoner is a great victory and joy. No one should be held hostage by Putin, tortured and die in Putin's prison," she wrote in her post on X platform. This was reported by the Russian service of Voice of America, which called the prisoner exchange between the West and Moscow "the largest since the Cold War."
