Defence Express: Ukraine Destroyed S-300 With Neptune

This is the first ground target hit by this missile.

The Ukrainian Defence Forces attacked the position of the S-300 air defence system near the city of Novoshakhtinsk in the Rostov region of the Russian Federation on Wednesday, August 21, with an anti-ship missile Neptune, writes the military portal Defence Express.

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the strike was inflicted by units of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in cooperation with other components of the Defence Forces. The only known weapon that is at the disposal of the Navy and which is able to overcome 160 km to Novoshakhtinsk is the Neptune missile, writes Defence Express.

It has already been used to defeat Russian air defence systems in the temporarily occupied Crimea in 2023, as well as to strike Russian ships and other targets. Thus, the Ukrainian military is quite actively using Neptune in the war against Russia, since the missile allows for complex strikes, analysts say.

For example, to defeat the S-300 near Novoshakhtinsk, it was necessary to overcome the frontline zone saturated with anti-aircraft weapons and fly around the air defence positions in the occupied territory along a difficult route.

The publication suggests that the Defence Forces destroyed the S-300, which covered the Novoshakhtinsky refinery, thus creating a "corridor for strike UAVs".

Defence Express added that there is no official information about the modernization of Neptune to hit ground targets. But turning an anti-ship missile into such a means is a difficult task, because it requires the installation of terrain enveloping systems, navigation systems, as well as very sensitive homing heads.
