A general strike is scheduled in Israel for September 2. It is organised by the largest trade union federation. The participants demand from the authorities the immediate release of hostages held in the Gaza Strip since October 7 last year by the Hamas group, recognised as a terrorist group in the U.S. and the European Union, reports Radio Svaboda.
Arnon Bar-David, head of the trade union federation, believes that the Israeli authorities are postponing agreements with Hamas for political reasons.
Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid made a similar statement. ‘There are still living hostages there, we can still make a deal. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is not going for it for political reasons,’ The Jerusalem Post quoted Lapid as saying.
The forum of families of hostages captured by Hamas has also called for a strike.
During the strike, Ben-Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv will stop working, government offices, businesses, schools and kindergartens will be partially closed. Medics will work on a weekend schedule.
In the evening of August 31, soldiers of the Israel Defence Forces found the bodies of six murdered hostages in the Gaza Strip. On September 1, Israelis protested demanding a deal with Hamas. Demonstrators blocked intersections and main roads across the country.
Netanyahu said the rescue of those captured by the Jihadist group remains his government's priority.
