Putin Miscalculated Again

Russia failed to catch up with Ukraine in drone production.

In 2023, the Russian Armed Forces received about 140 thousand drones of various types, and this year their production is planned to increase “almost tenfold,” Vladimir Putin said at a meeting of the military-industrial commission. Even if this plan is realized and the Russian Federation is able to produce 1.4 million UAVs, this figure will be significantly lower than that of Ukraine, where they are planning to produce 2 million drones, writes The Moscow Times.

Most of the drones produced in Russia will be sent to the war in Ukraine, and the “advanced technologies and new engineering solutions” used to create drones will provide the Russian army with an “advantage on the battlefield,” Putin said. In the future, according to him, serial production of UAVs will be organized throughout the Russian Federation on the basis of 48 specialized centers, the construction of which will be completed by 2030. The head of Russia also called for the lifting of all existing restrictions on the supply of drones to the troops and emphasized the need for large enterprises to interact with small businesses in this area.

In early spring, Deputy Minister of Strategic Industries of Ukraine Anna Hvozdyar reported that Ukrainian manufacturers can produce up to 150 thousand drones per month, which is more than the Russian Armed Forces, according to Vladimir Putin, received in all of 2023. In total, by the end of this year, the Ukrainian side intends to produce 2 million drones, Hvozdyar noted.

Currently, about 200 companies are involved in the production of UAVs in Ukraine, of which about 60 work on government orders. In March, Minister of Strategic Industries of Ukraine Oleksandr Kamyshin emphasized the importance of drones as one of the key types of weapons on modern battlefields, expressing confidence that by the end of 2024, Ukrainian enterprises will be able to produce “more than a million” drones, including those that can cover distances of over a thousand kilometers.
