Reuters: Moscow Is Trying To Help Trump Get Elected With AI Content

US intelligence has revealed details.

Russia has created more artificial intelligence (AI) content to influence the US presidential election than any other foreign power, part of a larger effort to boost Donald Trump.

Reuters reported.

An official at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), speaking on condition of anonymity, made the comments at a briefing for reporters about the use of AI by Russia and other countries to influence the November 5 vote.

The AI content created by Moscow, he said, is “consistent with a larger Russian effort to boost the candidacy of the former president (Trump) and denigrate the vice president (Harris) and the Democratic Party, including through conspiracy theories.”

Like other forms of artificial intelligence, generative AI learns from past data how to take actions. Using this learning, it creates new content, such as text, images, and videos, that appear to be created by humans.

An ODNI official said Russia is generating more AI content to influence the November election than any other country, but did not say how much AI content it is generating.

Russia is a much more sophisticated player, he said, with a better understanding of how U.S. elections work and what targets to choose.

Asked how Russia is distributing AI-generated content, the official pointed to a July 9 Justice Department announcement that it had disrupted an alleged Moscow-backed operation that used AI-enhanced social media accounts to spread pro-Kremlin messages in the U.S. and elsewhere.

The official said “Russian influencers” orchestrated a widely publicized video in which a woman claims to have been the victim of a hit-and-run car crash in which Harris fled the scene. But the video was staged, not created by AI, he said. Last week, Microsoft said its investigation found the video was the result of a covert Russian disinformation operation.

China is using AI content to try to influence how it is perceived around the world, but not to influence the outcome of the U.S. election, the official said.
