Who will answer for these crimes?
A reader whose son serves in Pechy contacted the editorial board of Charter97.org.
We quote her letter in full:
“Dear editors, my son is now “serving time” — that's what I call his military service in Pechy. On the surface, everything seems fine, they even created a community on Viber where you can communicate with parents, but they only allow you to write about positive things. From there, I receive messages from my son that he is doing well.
But from his colleague, who has already suffered and been released, I learned that our children are being tortured by hunger. They feed them poorly, very little. They give them some hot gruel and order them to eat it in 2 minutes. The boys don't have time to eat, because the hot liquid burns their lips and mouth, and if you don't eat it in two minutes, you go hungry.
If only they could walk! They make hungry children run in rags for 20 kilometers in this 30-degree heat. Our children's feet are covered in blisters and are starting to fester.
My son's colleague says that many suffer from depression because they simply cannot stand this torture.
A young man was recently buried in our neighbourhood. The official document states it was an accident at the training ground. There was no information in the media anywhere. But there were representatives of the military unit at the funeral. I knew this child personally. A 20-year-old guy, smart, cheerful, sociable. The first version of his death was suicide, but officially on paper — an accident at the training ground.
And again silence, they are torturing and killing our children, and who will answer for these crimes according to the law?”
