Ukraine Agrees To 'Olympic Truce' With Russia

The Foreign Ministry speaker responded to Italy's initiative.

Ukraine agrees to a truce with Russia for the duration of the Winter Olympics, which will be held from February 6 to 22, 2026. Such statement was made by the speaker of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Georgy Tykhiy.

He said Ukraine supports Italy's call for a truce during the Winter Olympics-2026.

But Tykhiy reminded that the Kremlin has previously repeatedly committed aggression against sovereign states during the Olympic Games. He believes this was done on purpose, because during the Olympics all media attention is focused on sports.

"Russia started the invasion of Georgia during the Olympic truce. Russia started the invasion of Ukraine during the Olympic truce," Tykhiy reminded.

The speaker of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry emphasized that Ukraine is ready for a truce with Russia at any moment. Kiev believes that the fire can be stopped before the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Italy's proposal for a truce

In October this year, Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said that Rome proposes to introduce a worldwide truce for the duration of the 2026 Winter Olympics (to be held in Italy - ed.). The idea was supported by the United Nations. The Italian government's proposal also concerns a truce in Russia's war against Ukraine.
