The new rules of engagement will be discussed today.
NATO is discussing the possibility of shooting down Russian warplanes that intrude into the airspace of alliance countries, an informed source told The Telegraph. He said the decision to destroy a fighter jet is proposed to be guided by the presence of missiles on board to strike ground targets, as well as the aircraft's flight path. Also, the commander-in-chief of NATO forces in Europe Alexus Grinkiewicz suggested creating a unified air and missile defense system to eliminate "national reservations" - restrictions imposed by individual member states on the use of their weapons.
The issue of new rules of engagement will be discussed at a meeting of NATO defense ministers on Wednesday, October 15. Prior to that, according to Financial Times (FT) sources, the alliance's countries had proposed easing restrictions on pilots patrolling the bloc's eastern border to allow them to fire on targets violating air borders. The idea was put forward by Eastern European countries with the support of France and Britain. Earlier, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that the alliance is ready to use force, but only against those Russian planes that pose a direct threat.
In late September, representatives of NATO countries warned Moscow of their readiness to shoot down Russian planes that intrude into their airspace. The heads of the British, German and French embassies noted that Russia deliberately violates air borders with warplanes and drones.
