Syrian Leader Goes To Putin To Demand Assad's Extradition

The politician plans to discuss two key issues.

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa intends to visit Moscow on Wednesday, October 15, the government channel Syria TV and a Reuters source in the Syrian government said. He said the Syrian president planned to discuss two key issues: the extradition of former Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, whom the new authorities want to prosecute for crimes, and the continued presence of Russian troops at bases in Tartus and Hmeimim.

Ahmed al-Sharaa previously headed the al-Qaeda-linked group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, and last December he took control of Damascus by forming a new government. Because of this, Bashar al-Assad urgently left the capital and received asylum in Russia.

According to the German publication Die Zeit, Assad and his family live in Moscow City. According to a source close to Assad's family, he spends a lot of time playing online games and hardly ever appears in public. Assad has three apartments in one of the capital's elite residential complexes. Also, according to the source, the former president often visits a guarded country house in the Moscow region.

In an interview with CBS television channel, the new Syrian leader said that Damascus would build relations with Russia and China based on national interests. At the same time, he emphasized that cooperation with Moscow does not exclude interaction with Western countries.
