Israel's government may split.
Israel's government is facing a crisis after Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir threatened to withdraw from the coalition unless Netanyahu eliminates Hamas and imposes the death penalty on terrorists.
The Times of Israel reports The Times of Israel.
The politician said he had set a personal deadline for the prime minister to fulfill two demands: the complete elimination of the Hamas terror group and the imposition of the death penalty for convicted terrorists.
Itamar Ben Gvir hinted that Netanyahu "understands very well the consequences" if his demands are not met. If those conditions are not met, he said, his far-right Otzma Yehudit party will withdraw from the coalition government.
The minister did not give an exact date for a possible withdrawal from the government, saying the prime minister "knows very well how much time is left."
Ben Gvir emphasized that the elimination of Hamas was one of the main conditions of his political force when entering the government, so he does not understand why Netanyahu is slow in implementing it.
He also demands the swift passage of a bill on the death penalty for terrorists, which he said was spelled out in coalition agreements back in 2022. The bill in question was recently already advanced to the Knesset.
Conflict within the government
This is not the first time Ben Gvir has blackmailed the coalition.
His party has previously withdrawn from the government in protest over agreements to release hostages in exchange for a ceasefire. The minister has openly criticized any negotiations with Hamas and said that "Israel has no right to national defeat."
When voting on the US plan proposed by Donald Trump, Ben Gvir was also among those opposed, arguing that an amnesty for Hamas militants was unacceptable.
Pressures on Netanyahu are mounting
In the meantime, Israeli Justice Minister Yariv Levin announced the creation of a special criminal tribunal for militants involved in the October 7, 2023 attacks. The new body will have the ability to impose death sentences under the Genocide Prevention Law of 1950.
By the backdrop of these announcements, Ben Gvir continues to ramp up pressure on the prime minister, claiming that "there are no more excuses" and hinting that the fate of the government depends on Netanyahu's resolve.
