The cause is known.
US President Donald Trump's hopes for a quick meeting with Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin in Budapest may collapse. The reason is Russia's stance on ending the war in Ukraine.
This is reported by CNN.
In particular, on October 16, Trump announced after a phone call with Putin that a new summit would take place between them. But before that, they "agreed that our top advisers will meet next week."
"The first United States meetings will be led by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, as well as a number of others to be appointed," he wrote in Truth Social.
A White House official told CNN, however, that a preliminary meeting between Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has been postponed for now.
It is unclear why the meeting will not take place this week, although one source said the secretary of state and the Russian foreign minister have different expectations about the possible end of Russia's war against Ukraine.
In particular, Rubio and Lavrov had a phone conversation yesterday, October 20, and discussed "next steps" after Trump and Putin's conversation about the possible end of the war.
"(U.S. Secretary of State - Ed.) emphasized the importance of the upcoming meetings as an opportunity for Moscow and Washington to work together to advance a long-term resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in line with President Trump's vision," the State Department said.
A source familiar with the situation, however, said that after that call, officials felt that Russia's position on the war in Ukraine had not changed enough.
The source said Rubio was unlikely to recommend a meeting between Putin and Trump next week. That said, the secretary of state and the Russian foreign minister could talk again this week.
