Meteoprobes From Belarus Detected In Five Lithuanian Districts

The head of the Lithuanian National Center for Crisis Management Vilmantas Vitkauskas commented on the violation of the border by Belarusian weather probes.

"The intensity of balloon flights was very high, and most likely it did not come from one point, but was a coordinated operation," he said on the air of LRT radio.

According to the head of the National Crisis Management Center, quoted by diena.lt, smuggled balloons from Belarus have already been detected in five municipalities of Lithuania: Lazdiai, Druskininkai, Varena, Šalčininkai and Vilnius.

"The latest attack was recorded in the area of Vilnius airport. In fact, the geography is very wide," said Vilmantas Vitkauskas.

"It seems to have been the most intensive invasion of smuggled balloons into our country this year. This intensity is measured by two parameters: the time of launching the balloons into our country and the quantity. For this reason, it was decided to suspend flights to ensure the safety of civil aviation," he said.

Because of the threat of these balloons, Vilnius International Airport was closed from Tuesday evening to 6:30 Wednesday morning, and traffic through the two active border crossing points with Belarus - Miadininkai and Šalčininkai - was temporarily suspended overnight.

The last time Vilnius Airport was hit by smuggled balloons was in early October. At that time, more than 20 weather balloons violated Lithuanian airspace.
