Will this be a real shift in U.S. strategy?
US President Donald Trump has finally disappointed in his talks with Putin and for the first time imposed direct sanctions against the Russian oil industry. The decision marked a turning point in Trump's second administration and signaled the end of his attempts to resolve the war in Ukraine through personal contacts with the Kremlin, writes The Wall Street Journal (translated by Charter97.org).
Sources said Trump discussed the decision with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The president was offered three options for sanctions, ranging from mild to severe. He chose the middle one: restrictive measures against energy giants Rosneft and Lukoil.
"We have waited too long. It's time to act," Trump told reporters.
Officials said the president's patience had run out after Russia launched renewed strikes on Ukrainian cities, including a kindergarten, shortly after he canceled a summit with Putin in Budapest. "Every time I talk to Vladimir, the conversation is good, but nothing happens," Trump admitted.
The sanctions are aimed at pushing Moscow to negotiate, but Trump remains hopeful of a peace deal. According to former US special envoy for Ukraine Kurt Volcker, the president "still wants a deal with Putin," although he is annoyed by the dragging out of the process.
The new measures have already begun to have an impact. India has cut its purchases of Russian oil and Chinese companies have temporarily suspended shipments. Putin acknowledged that the sanctions would hit the economy, but said "no self-respecting state acts under pressure."
