The chief negotiator was sent to Washington.
Following Donald Trump's abrupt reversal of Donald Trump, who after this week imposed sanctions on Rosneft and Lukoil and canceled a summit with Vladimir Putin in Budapest, the Kremlin has urgently dispatched a key Ukraine negotiator to the United States.
The head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund Kirill Dmitriev, who has been building ties with Trump since his first term as president, flew to Washington on Friday, according to The Moscow Times.
Dmitriev, who is to Putin through family ties and is married to a close friend of his youngest daughter Ekaterina Tikhonova, will hold talks with Trump administration officials to "discuss the future of U.S.-Russia relations," a source told CNN. Dmitriev's visit to Washington was also confirmed by a RIA Novosti source.
The 49-year-old Dmitriev, a Harvard and Stanford graduate and former investment banker at U.S. bank Goldman Sachs, will have the difficult task of salvaging relations with Trump.
