U.S. Imposes Sanctions On Colombia's President
Because of the "drug trade."
On Friday, October 24, the United States imposed sanctions against Colombian President Gustavo Petro and his inner circle. The reason was drug trafficking, if the Trump administration is to be believed.
This was reported by Reuters.
In particular, the U.S. Treasury Department announced sanctions against the Colombian president, his wife and son, as well as the head of the Colombian Interior Ministry Armando Benedetti.
"Since President Gustavo Petro took power, cocaine production in Colombia has reached its most expensive levels in decades, flooding the United States and poisoning Americans," U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said.
It should be noted that the Trump administration has accused the Colombian president of refusing to stop the flow into the United States.
Earlier this week, US President Donald Trump called Petro "the leader of the illegal drug trade." This came after Petro accused Washington of committing "murder" and said the US fired on a boat off the coast of Venezuela that belonged to a "frugal family" rather than a rebel group.
"Effectively fighting drug trafficking for decades led me to adopt this measure by the government of the very society we have helped so much to end cocaine use. A complete paradox - but not a step backward or on your knees," the Colombian president reacted in X.
Reuters notes that the imposition of sanctions adds Petro to a short list that includes the leaders of Russia, Venezuela and North Korea.
As for Colombia's interior minister, he said in an interview that he was punished only for saying that Petro was not a drug trafficker and that the sanctions proved that the U.S. fight against drugs "was a sham."
Reminder, a month earlier, in late September, the U.S. canceled the Colombian president's visa after his participation in protests in New York. In particular, he urged the US military to ignore Trump's orders.
