The final decision will be released on Monday, October 27.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda proposes to close the border with Belarus for a long period of time and limit transit to Kaliningrad due to the threat of smuggling, which is carried out with the help of meteorships.
The statement of the Lithuanian president leads LRT.
It is noted that Nauseda assesses the incidents of recent days and the disruptions in airport operations as a hybrid attack on Lithuania, to which it is necessary to respond in both symmetric and asymmetric ways.
In the coming days, the government should propose ways to respond, the Lithuanian presidential administration said.
"Among the options to be considered are a prolonged closure of the border with Belarus and limiting transit to Kaliningrad," the statement said.
The fact that the Lithuanian authorities are seriously thinking about closing the border with Belarus for a long time was announced by the country's Prime Minister Inga Ruginenė.
She said that in the near future the head of the Interior Ministry will hold a technical working meeting with the heads of responsible agencies. On Monday, October 27, a consultation with the Committee on National Security and Defense is scheduled, Ruginenene said on her social networks.
"We will consider both quickly implemented and long-term solutions," she wrote.
The Prime Minister does not rule out that the border with Belarus will have to be closed for a longer period.
"We are doing everything to protect people and the security of the country. All institutions and services are working without counting the hours," Ruginenė said.
The final decision will be made public after the meeting of the National Security Commission on Monday, October 27.
Three times in one week
Reminder that on the night of October 25-26, Lithuania closed the border with Belarus again for several hours. This was done after helium-filled meteoprobes entered the territory of the Baltic country.
The authorities ordered to close two roadblocks, which are located in the village of Miadininkai and the district center of Šalčininkai.
Earlier Vilnius airport reported the suspension of flights until 02:00 on October 26 due to the movement of balloons in its direction.
Before this week, Lithuania has already twice closed border crossings because of the flight of weather probes into the country. Supposedly, they contained contraband.
The previous restrictions were imposed on October 22 and 24.
