CNN: China Embarrassed Itself With Its Newest Aircraft Carrier

It proved to be considerably weaker than the old American ones.

China's newest aircraft carrier "Fujian" was significantly weaker than the 50-year-old aircraft carrier of the U.S. Navy in one key parameter - the speed of aircraft launch. This is reported by CNN, citing two former officers who served on U.S. aircraft carriers.

The officers said the configuration of the flight deck of China's soon-to-be-commissioned aircraft carrier significantly limits the launch and lift-off speed of aircraft compared to U.S. Nimitz-class aircraft carriers of the 1970s.

"The operational capabilities of the Fujian are only about 60 percent of those of the Nimitz class," said Karl Schuster, a former U.S. Navy captain who served on two U.S. aircraft carriers.

After reviewing photos of the Fujian's flight deck, Schuster and retired Lt. Cmdr. Keith Stewart, a former U.S. Navy pilot, noted that the Fujian's deck layout limits simultaneous takeoffs and landings of aircraft.
