Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer have signed a memorandum of cooperation on Eurofighter fighter jets.
"During the talks, delegations signed agreements on the purchase of Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets. Mr. Prime Minister and I have just signed a declaration of cooperation on this issue in your presence," Erdoğan told a press conference after talks with the British prime minister.
The politician noted that Turkey and the United Kingdom are two close allies, so the Turkish side considers the concluded agreements as a new symbol of strategic relations between the countries.
"I thank Mr. Starmer and his team for the work done by the United Kingdom for the Eurofighter consortium. I also thank the leaders of other consortium member countries for their constructive stance," Erdogan said.
The agreement was signed during the British prime minister's visit to Ankara. Downing Street said the document aims to strengthen the combat capability of the Turkish armed forces and strengthen NATO's position in a "key region." In addition, the agreement is designed to increase the level of interoperability of the air forces of the alliance's countries. Deliveries of fighter jets are scheduled to begin in 2030.
