The European Council Promised To Continue To Pressurize Lukashenko's Regime

Europe will defend the EU's eastern border.

The European Council expressed solidarity with the people of Lithuania in connection with the constant and provocative actions of official Minsk against the EU and its member states. European Council President Antonio Costa wrote about this on social network X.

"These hybrid actions must stop and Belarus must prevent further incidents. The EU will continue to put pressure on the regime for its complicity in Russia's war against Ukraine and will support the protection of the EU's eastern border," wrote António Costa.

Earlier, the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry sent a note of protest to Belarus over the violation of airspace and notified that it was closing the state border "until further notice."

Reminder, in the morning of October 27, Lithuania said it was preparing for the indefinite closure of the border with Belarus. The government planned to make a final decision on this on Wednesday, October 29. Checkpoints "Miadininkai" and "Shalchininkai" have already stopped working since October 26 after the flight of weather probes from Belarus, which paralyzed the work of Vilnius airport.

The State Border Guard Service of Lithuania reported that since October 27, the checkpoint "Shalchininkai" (from the Belarusian side "Beniakoni") is closed indefinitely, while only representatives of certain groups can pass through "Miadininkai" ("Kamenny Log").

These are holders of diplomatic passports or carriers of diplomatic mail, transit passengers to Kaliningrad region from Belarus and back on a simplified transit document, Lithuanian and EU citizens with family members, heading to Lithuania, as well as holders of valid Lithuanian residence permit, returning to the country.

Before that, over the past few days, Lithuania has already closed the border with Belarus three times and suspended the work of airports because of weather probes with smuggled cigarettes. The country's authorities have expressed the opinion that "the border with Belarus may have to be closed for a longer period of time."

Some buses have already been returned from the border. Carriers are canceling flights to and from Lithuania.
