More Than 500 Meteoprobes Flew Into Lithuania From Belarus

More than 100 smugglers have been detained.

In Lithuania in 2025, hundreds of meteoprobes with smuggled tobacco have been detected. This was stated by the deputy head of the state border protection service at the Interior Ministry of the Baltic republic Antanas Montvidas.

"This year border guards have installed and taken away from the landing place 544 balloons with smuggled cigarettes launched from the territory of Belarus," he said.

According to Montvidas, 101 smugglers were detained while trying to pick up the parcels.

The Lithuanian Border Guard Service emphasized that weather probes launched by smugglers threaten flight safety and have already caused several times the suspension of flights by Vilnius International Airport.

On October 22, in connection with the incidents related to the violation of Lithuanian airspace by weather probes used for cigarette smuggling, the Lithuanian side sent an official note of protest to Belarus. The Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that these actions of the Belarusian side were a gross violation of international legislation. October 27, Lithuanian authorities closed checkpoints on the border with Belarus. The restrictions were imposed for an indefinite period of time.

Dictator of Belarus Alexander Lukashenka said that Minsk was ready to apologize if it was to blame for the incident with weather probes in Lithuania.
